class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In his famous TEDx talk, Simon Sinek maps out \u201c<em>The Golden Circle<\/em>\u201d suggesting we should ask three levels of questions, <strong>Why? What? How?<\/strong><\/p><p>I agree.<\/p><p>My experience with leadership teams, senior executives, and project management professionals has taught me that pretty much any initiative needs to address these three questions.<\/p><p>Sinek suggested that we <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sioZd3AxmnE\" rel=\"noopener\">Start With Why<\/a>. Since the fundamental motivation that drives our path can be very powerful, for organizations as well as for individuals, it would seem to make sense.<\/p><p>But hold on.<\/p><p>Although the building blocks are solid, in our case, the order or logical sequence for addressing these questions needs to be different.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6757433 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6757433\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/vayomar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/WHAT-1024x597.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-3273\" alt=\"GOLDEN\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vayomar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/WHAT-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/vayomar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/WHAT-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/vayomar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/WHAT-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/vayomar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/WHAT.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f683ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f683ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>4 Key Building Blocks<\/strong><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e70b28b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e70b28b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let\u2019s expand the scope of our discussion.<\/p><p>Looking back on the countless projects I have managed myself or been invited to assist with, I find that they all had <strong>4 fundamental building blocks<\/strong>:<\/p><ol><li>Desired value<\/li><li>Obstacles<\/li><li>Solutions<\/li><li>Resources<\/li><\/ol><p>The <strong>Desired Value<\/strong> represents a specific, time-bound outcome or reality represents an acceptable return on investment (ROI) for all of the risk and effort taken to achieve it. My use of the words ROI \u201cReturn On Investment\u201d should not lead you to believe that this definition is limited to the business world. All endeavors that consume resources must strive for acceptable RIO. Must justify their use of resources with an acceptable profit. If you are running an NGO, the profit you are committed to (and accountable for) is the scope of positive social change your effort achieves. If you are a teacher, the profit is your educational impact on the overall well-being of your students. If you are a politician, your profit is the scope of the mandate you gain from your defined constituency.<\/p><p>The <strong>Obstacles<\/strong> represent anything that might stand in your way on the path to your Desired Value. This may include personal weaknesses and shortcomings; harmful internal dynamics within the team you are part of and external forces such as market trends, a competitive landscape, legal regulations, international relations, and so on.<\/p><p>The <strong>Solutions<\/strong> represent any course of action that leads to the Desired Value.<\/p><p>The <strong>Resources<\/strong> comprise any assets that need to be utilized or expended in order to successfully implement the solution that leads to the Desired Value.<\/p><p>Notice how the Desired Value paragraph was the longest? Yep. Let\u2019s say that I define the desired value as the answer to my <strong>Why<\/strong> as: \u201cI would like to reach destination X by time frame Y.\u201d<\/p><p>Now that I have defined my motivation, according to Simon, I need to consider the <strong>How<\/strong>?<\/p><p>Well, I have multiple possible courses of action: I could walk, hitchhike, take a bus, take a train, drive, ride a bicycle, or not go at all. How then should I determine the best course of action? And if I select one, what will be the question you ask me if you wish to understand my decision-making process? The most logical question when trying to understand why one course of action was selected over the other seems to be: <strong>Why<\/strong>? Why did you decide to fly rather than drive?<\/p><p>According to Simon\u2019s approach, the answer would be \u201c<strong><em>because I would like to reach destination X by time frame Y\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><p>However, this answer doesn\u2019t really help us understand the decision-making process, because it will be the same answer no matter which course of action I have decided upon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a307e72 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a307e72\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>So what now?<\/strong><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2906e2d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2906e2d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now let\u2019s try an alternative approach. Let\u2019s adopt the <strong>What<\/strong> question as the one that leads to the definition of the fundamental motivation that drives our path and save the <strong>Why<\/strong> question for uncovering why we chose one path over the other. Now, the answer will not be limited to \u201c<strong><em>because I would like to reach destination X by time frame Y<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. The answer will be a combination of the fundamental motivation cross-referenced with the current reality I am subject to, most specifically the Obstacles that stand between what I am trying to achieve and where I am now.
